Root Canals Get a Bad Rap, but Don't Deserve It

Root Canals Get a Bad Rap, but Don't Deserve ItAlthough millions of root canal procedures are performed each year, many people still fear this common and necessary treatment.

Root canal therapy has received a bad reputation as being painful and uncomfortable, but in reality, most people report the procedure is no more uncomfortable than a standard cavity filling. By learning more about root canal therapy, you may feel more comfortable in the event that you need one in the future.

What Happens during a Root Canal?

If we determine that you are in need of a root canal, the process is fairly simple. The affected area is numbed using a local anesthetic, and a dental dam is placed around the tooth so that it stays dry. We then use a drill to make a small hole in the tooth to access the diseased pulp. The root canals are disinfected and filled with a rubbery material, and we close the tooth with a filling.

Are Root Canals Painful?

Much of the anxiety associated with root canals comes from fear about how much it might hurt, as many people believe that root canals lead to excruciating pain. However, because the tooth is numbed and we take every step to keep you comfortable, you shouldn't experience any pain.

Additionally, the root canal procedure will help to relieve the pain you've already experienced due to the diseased tooth pulp, and the treatment will also help you to preserve your natural tooth structure.

Is Extraction an Option?

Extraction is always an option for a diseased tooth, but it's usually the last resort. Many complications can result from extracting a tooth, and to prevent shifting of the teeth and changing of your face shape, you'll need to invest in a bridge or other restoration.
