The mouth is a crucial part of the human biology. In it, the most fundamental fluid is saliva. Saliva is a crucial part of keeping the mouth properly functional. It constitutes largely of water plus other substances that aid in the digestion process and also keeping the teeth and gums as strong as possible. However, at times people suffer from xerostomia also known as dry mouth. This condition is quite uncomfortable and cause people to feel very awkward since even basic functions such as speech become quite difficult. Causes Of Dry MouthA dry mouth can be caused by several factors. One of the most common is when someone is one some medications. Some sedatives and laxatives cause the salivary glands to stop production of saliva, which then causes the dry feeling. Some prescription and nonprescription medicines used to treat anxiety, pain, allergies and antihistamines can bring about this problem. Some diseases and infections are also known to bring about a dry mouth. These diseases include diabetes, anemia, hypertension, stroke and even mumps just to name a few. However, we find that one of the most common reasons is dehydration. Since the body produces about two to four pints per day, it's essential that you drink plenty of water throughout the day. If you think that a some medication is causing you to have a dry mouth, it's important to speak to your doctor so that they can either adjust your dose, or give you another drug that is just as efficient but without the side effects. If that's not an option, you can then get a medication that boosts the production of saliva in the mouth. However, for normal dryness in the mouth, you can simply chew on some sugar free gum, drink plenty of water and if you are living in a dry environment, use a humidifier. You should also breathe in through your nose as opposed to your mouth as much as possible. This way, your mouth stays as moist thus keeping your mouth as healthy as possible. |
