How to Properly Care for Teeth Affected by Diabetes

Posted on 1/25/2020 by Dick Hikade, DDS
How to Properly Care for Teeth Affected by DiabetesMany people all over the world suffer from diabetes. While diabetes has negative effects on a person's physicality, it also affects oral health quite negatively. People who suffer from diabetes need to take extra care of their teeth.

Research has shown that gum disease and diabetes are linked. To prevent gum disease, we've compiled a few pointers on how to care for your teeth if you suffer from diabetes.

The best way to care for your teeth while suffering from diabetes is to maintain perfect oral care at all times. The best way to do this is to brush and floss at least twice a day or after every meal if possible. Alongside brushing and flossing, diabetes sufferers will need to schedule regular visits to our office once every 6 months for a dental cleaning. While regular brushing and flossing will prevent a lot of bacterial buildup in the mouth, regular dental cleaning will make sure your mouth is totally clean.

Hydration Matters!

Whether you suffer from type 1 or 2 diabetes, staying hydrated is an important factor in your oral health. Diabetes sufferers often have dry mouths due to fluctuations in blood sugar. The best way to combat a dry mouth is by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. It's important to pace yourself while drinking water. Staying hydrated is more of an endurance race than a sprint. It may also be necessary to stay away from liquids that are diuretics. You may need to lower your intake of things like coffee and tea and switch to water.

While living with diabetes is difficult, we're here to help you when it comes to oral health. Whatever questions you have about how diabetes affects your oral health; we can answer them. Please call our office, and we'll be happy to assist you or provide any information you need!
