Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet can improve the overall health of your teeth. Just like other parts of your body, your teeth and gums need vitamins and minerals to help keep them healthy. There are several types of produce you can eat to help with optimal oral health.
What Type of Produce Should I Eat?
Eating apples and other citrus fruits can play a monumental role in your tooth health. Apples and other fiber-rich foods such as oranges and celery can help clean your teeth naturally. They also increase your salivation, which can neutralize any malic acids and citric acids left in your mouth. Unlike their juice form, apples are good for your teeth in that they help reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth known for causing bacteria. They also help wash away any particles of food left in your mouth, which can cause decay if left.
Carrots and other “root” vegetables are important for your oral health as well. They contain the fibrous material needed to help generate clean saliva in your mouth. Celery and carrots are also well known for having beta carotene, which helps build and keep strong teeth. Leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, and lettuce, and dark vegetables like cabbage and asparagus, contain a plethora of minerals that are necessary for improving your health. Phosphorus is the biggest mineral offered by these types of vegetables and they help your teeth absorb calcium and magnesium, which is good for your build strong teeth as well.
Berries and other plants rich in anthocyanins help prevent the colonization of bacteria, especially on teeth and gums. These compounds disrupt the bacteria forming process, giving you a cleaner mouth with less plaque and reducing tooth decay.
