Is a Saltwater Rinse Better Than Mouthwash?

Posted on 11/9/2020 by Dick Hikade, DDS
Is a Saltwater Rinse Better Than Mouthwash?Rinsing your mouth twice a day is useful for eliminating bacteria in your mouth and keeping it fresh. You can either rinse with a saltwater solution or use a mouthwash. Both of them have many medical values, but most of our clients wonder whether a saltwater rinse is better than using a mouthwash. Let's have a look at both.

Saltwater Rinse

Saltwater rinse is an excellent remedy used for treating mouth wounds. It is a natural disinfectant that is affordable. To make a saltwater solution, you need half a teaspoon of table sodium chloride (table salt) dissolved in a glass of warm water. Saltwater is isotonic, meaning it has the same salts that your body has. For this reason, saltwater does not irritate the soft tissues in the mouth, such as the gum. Our professionals recommend it as an ideal healing aid after any dental procedure. It works perfectly as a short-term measure for mouth ulcers and any dental infections and eliminates bacteria. However, saltwater disturbs the pH level of the mouth when used for a long time. It always softens the gum and enamel.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash has got a neutral pH level making it ideal for everyday use. Most of them help get rid of specific dental needs. Those used daily should have a low fluoride dose and should also be alcohol-free. It is an effective prevention of cavities and maintaining oral hygiene. However, some mouthwash contains up to 20% alcohol, which is not suitable for children.

Saltywater or Mouthwash?

Saltwater rinse is perfect for you because it is natural and affordable. It is also easy to mix the solution. It can be used by adults who are supposed to avoid alcohol and kids. Mouthwash is also perfect for you but only if you use the correct product. If you want to use mouthwash but are unsure which product is best for you, contact our office for help.
