6 foods that are bad for your teeth

Posted on 1/24/2022 by Dick Hikade, DDS
6 foods that are bad for your teethRegardless of age, the causes of tooth decay remain the same. Tooth decay is a result of corrosion of your tooth enamel by acids in your mouth. The bacteria in your mouth break down food particles left, and the by-product is acid. Therefore, to avoid tooth decay, you should limit the intake of foods that contribute to increased acidity in your mouth. Some of the foods that are known to produce acids after being broken down by bacteria include sugars and carbohydrates.

Sugary Candies and Sweets

If you must consume candies and sweets, it is advisable to opt for those that quickly dissolve in your mouth. Avoid hardened sweets that take too much to dissolve and remain in your mouth. This will give the bacteria the breakdown of the sugars in your mouth producing acids in the process. Sweets such as lollipops can be particularly harmful to your dental health. After eating sweets ensure you brush your teeth, floss, and drink plenty of water.

Soft drinks

Carbonated drinks are harmful whether they have sugars or not. The acids in the drinks will eat into your enamel which will start the process of tooth decay.

Pickles

The pickling process requires vinegar which is rich in acids. Acids corrode your enamel, therefore, exposing your tooth to infections.

Wine

Wine is harmful because it has acids that cause tooth decay. Also, tannins are found in red wine which causes your mouth to dry, therefore increasing your chances of staining your teeth.

Pasta Sauce

Adding tomato sauce to your pasta cause double damage since you will be exposing your teeth to acids from the sauce, while the bacteria in your mouth will be feeding on the carbohydrates.

Dried Fruits

Dried fruits such as raisins and apricots can stick on your tooth surface causing undue damage to your tooth's enamel.
